Winterval After Dark Brings Grown-Up Magic to Waterford This Christmas
Winterval After Dark Brings Grown-Up Magic to Waterford This Christmas
This winter, Waterford opens its doors to all of those seeking festive enchantment after dark. From November 21st until December 23rd, every Thursday through Sunday, Winterval transforms into a city of lights, music, taste, and atmosphere.
As dusk falls, the heart of the city glows with more than 100,000 Christmas lights strewn across streets and squares. The Glow Fairylight Garden invites a slow stroll under twinkling branches, while the Christmas Markets beckon with mulled wine, artisan treats, and craft discoveries in a lively winter bazaar.
One of the most compelling experiences this year is Tasteful Tours, a curated gastro-tourism journey that winds through the city’s lesser-known corners. Participants savour local delicacies and drinks while hearing the stories of Waterford’s food producers and hospitality venues in an experience that blends local culture and seasonal indulgence.
In another evocative setting, the Churchyard Sessions offer live music in the old churchyard on Bailey’s New Street, where the winter air, cobbles, and night lights create a relaxed, atmospheric stage for acoustic sets and festive rhythms. These performances offer a grown-up label of stylish, informal entertainment.
For a truly distinctive experience, the Winterval Cruise departs from Adelphi Quay and gently glides along the waterway, offering panoramic views of the city lit up for the season. On deck or in the cosy indoor lounge, guests wrap up in blankets, sip hot chocolate or mulled wine, and watch reflections of festival lights dance across the River Suir.
The musical offering takes centre stage with the Christchurch Live concert series, set within the grandeur of Christ Church Cathedral, where renowned Irish artists perform intimate sets for the adult audience. Amid the cathedral’s vaults and glowing candles, the likes of Frances Black with her timeless voice, Pa Sheehy’s stripped-back acoustic craft, and the raw soulful power of Susan O’Neill bring live music to the winter nights.
In a national first of its kind, the Winterval Sky Spectacular Drone Show lifts the night sky over the River Suir into a choreographed visual feast. On the evening of November 22nd, 150 illuminated drones ascend, tracing stars, snowflakes, and festive formations above the water, synchronised to a soundtrack that lifts the spirit and slows the breath—a moment of pure wonder to savour with a drink in hand.
Visitors are invited to weave their own festive story this Winterval. Whether checking into the Christmas Markets for a late-night browse, hopping between music sets in cathedral and churchyard, sampling Waterford’s food and drink scene on a guided tour, or sailing beneath the lights on the river cruise, the city opens itself up as a grown-up playground of winter magic.
Winterval 2025 promises an elevated festive celebration: over fifty events, more than twenty new experiences, and a vibrant after-dark offering that reimagines the holiday season. Programme details and ticket booking are available now at www.winterval.ie.
