Visit Santa @ Winterval - In the magical 12th century caverns beneath Waterford's Medieval Museum
Sponsored by House of Waterford, Santa’s Grotto is one of the shining highlights of Winterval, returning to Waterford’s historic underground vaults for 2025, where children can step into Santa’s enchanting Christmas kingdom. From the moment little visitors arrive, they are greeted by cheerful elves, who guide them through a twinkling wonderland filled with festive surprises, sparkling decorations, and the gentle scent of cinnamon and pine.
Inside the grotto, children can meet Santa himself, share their Christmas wishes, and pose for magical photos in a truly immersive festive setting. The experience also includes a special play area designed to delight all senses: soft, colourful toys, tactile activities, and interactive features ensure younger guests have endless fun while exploring Santa’s world.
Tickets for Santa’s Grotto are now on sale. Families are encouraged to book early, as tickets often sell out quickly, guaranteeing every child the chance to experience the joy, wonder, and magic of meeting Santa in this unforgettable setting.

Waterford Named European City of Christmas 2025 – Winterval Set to Shine Brighter Than Ever
For the second year in a row, Waterford has proudly earned the title of European City of Christmas 2025, and the city is gearing up to celebrate in spectacular style. This year’s Winterval festival promises an expanded programme filled with exciting new additions and beloved traditions, capturing the true magic of the festive season.
While the full schedule of events will remain under wraps until October 9th, 2025, Festival Director Trevor Darmody has offered a sneak peek at what’s in store. Visitors can look forward to the return of Winterval’s most popular attractions, including:
The Winterval Ice Rink – Gliding back to the city’s lively quayside.
The Fairground – Bringing fun and thrills for all ages, also along the quays.
Winterval Illuminates – The spectacular light show returns to Cathedral Square, right beside Santa’s Kingdom.
The Winterval Christmas Market – A festive wonderland of artisan stalls, delicious treats, and unique gifts in the heart of the city.
New for 2025: Winterval Christmas Circus – A magical new addition making its debut with festive performances under the big top.
