Winterval, the largest Christmas festival in Ireland will feature over 60 free and ticketed events across Waterford city as part of an exciting new programme for 2018. The seventh annual Winterval will run from 17 November to 23 December this year. Check out eight new attractions to try at this year’s Winterval 2018.
1.BRAND NEW SANTA EXPERIENCE
New attractions for 2018 include Enchanted Christmas, a brand-new Santa experience at the Old Postal Sorting Centre. On Thursday. On Monday, 24 December, join Santa for a yummy pancake breakfast buffet! This is a group experience where children can sit down with Santa and discuss his plans in advance of the big night.
2.12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
The 12 Days of Christmas is continuing in December with events taking place across Waterford city. From spoken word to street theatre, each representing a gift from the iconic Christmas song. See what's on this week here.
3. SPRAOI SURPRISES
To top it off, this year there is a wonderful new Christmas attraction by the award-winning Waterford street arts and spectacle company, Spraoi, at Wyse Park. That special magic for which Spraoi are renowned will be on display, with that usual large-scale effect, along with music, lights, sound and spectacle, all transforming the city-centre park into a Christmas wonderland. Journey through time as you wend your way through the Manor St gates in Waterford’s historic city walls, and be transported to a magical land. Read more here.
4.TAKE AN ELFIE SELFIE
Call into Georges Court Shopping Centre and complete your Christmas photo album by getting a selfie in their brand-new Snow Family Winterland Station. The Theatre Royal will also have a selfie station so make sure to pop by when you attend the panto this year.
5. CHRISTMAS MARKETS
The Festival market is the perfect place to browse over Witerval. Pick up a yummy treat as you stroll around the stalls at Arundel and Constitution Squares searching for that perfect Christmas gift. Grab a bite and a beverage as you take in the amazing Winterval Illuminates light show at Cathedral Square.
6. CHRISTMAS CHARITY
Christmas just wouldn’t be complete without a charitable donation and at Winterval, there’s more than one fun way to spread some good Christmas karma. The Waterford Rotary Club Memorial Christmas Tree Appeal will support Waterford Hospice on John Roberts Square. At the Cartamundi Giving Tree at Georges Court Shopping Centre, for every homemade decoration hung, a donation of a toy to the St Vincent de Paul will be made by Cartamundi, the leading Waterford-based games manufacturer.
7. WATERFORD FROM ABOVE
The Waterford Eye, the iconic Big Wheel on Merchants Quay is an absolute must-visit this Winterval. Try the VIP experience on the attraction, which includes warm blankets, chocolates, and prosecco, or non-alcoholic fizz for children’s groups. More details here.
8. FESTIVAL FAVOURITES
As usual, Winterval won’t disappoint with Christmas favourites. Take in the wonderful sights and sounds of Winterval in 2018 on the Winterval Express Train or the Horse-drawn Sleigh.
