As a tribute to the much loved Christmas song, 12 Days of Christmas, over 12 days of Winterval look out for a unique happening, based on each of the 12 gifts presented.

From spoken word to string quartets and brass bands, and from street theatre to ceili’s and drumming, there’ll be something for everyone to enjoy.


Day 1

Date & Time: Fri, Nov 30th; 5.30pm

Location:  The Book Centre

Modwords present an evening of spoken word and song, exploring the origins of this much-loved melody  “The 12 Days of Christmas”.


Day 2

Date & Time: Sat, Dec 1st; All day

Location: Bishops Palace Green

Special Branch Carvings will produce a unique wood sculpture, highlighting the two turtle dove presented on Day 2.


Day 3

Date & Time: Sun, Dec 2nd; 3pm

Location: Applemarket

A special concert by City of Waterford Brass, with a twist, and some surprises, based on those three French Hens.


Day 4

Date & Time: Fri, Dec 7th; 4pm

Location: Medieval Museum

Libra String Quartet perform in this lovely setting, and there’ll be a special rendition of the famous song.


Day 5

Date & Time: Sat, Dec 8th; 1.30pm & 3.30pm

Location: The Applemarket / City Centre

Join the Juggling Maestro’s as they amaze with their juggling skills, using balls, clubs, and, of course, 5 gold rings!


Day 6 

Date & Time: Sun, Dec 9th; 2pm - 5pm 

Location:  Bishops Palace Garden

Mayfield Birds of Prey will be in place with some of their beautiful birds, get close up and personal and take a selfie too.  Will there be a goose too for the 6th day?



Day 7

Date & Time: Fri, Dec 14th; 3.30pm & 5pm

Location: Applemarket & JR Square

Street theatre company Realta perform walkabout performances, with their amazing beautiful, swan-like costumes.


Day 8

Date & Time: Sat, Dec 15th; 2 - 4pm

Location:  Applemarket

Waterford Walls host a drop-in workshop on the Applemarket, interpreting in their own dynamic way, the theme of the day - 8 Maids a Milking.


Day 9

Date & Time: Sun Dec 16th; 4pm

Location:  Igloo Stage, Constitution Square

There’ll be plenty of ladies (and gentlemen) dancing as Douglas Comhaltas host a ceili on the square. If you’ve forgotten the steps, don’t worry, there’ll be plenty of practised and experienced Irish dancers there to guide you along. 


Day 10

Date & Time: Fri, Dec 21st; 1pm-4pm

Join artist Sean Corcoran to help construct a community collaborative mosaic based around Lords a Leaping, which will be donated to Waterford’s Cultural Quarter for display after the festival. There’ll be lots of mosaic materials available to use, and feel free to bring your own special treasure, a coin, a button or a small medal to put your own individual stamp on this community project.


Day 11

Date & Time: Sat Dec 22nd; 3pm

Location: Applemarket

The De La Salle Scout and Pipe Band will certainly provide 11 pipers piping, as they entertain on the Applemarket.


Day 12

Date & Time: Sun Dec 23rd; 7.40pm

Location: Cathedral Sq

The final present on the 12th Day of Christmas also coincides with the finale of Winterval, and drumming band The Big Bang will bring the festival to a suitable noisy percussive climax after the final Winterval Illuminates Show. Expect fast, furious percussion, with some special Christmas characters, and a surprise or two!
